The Renal Care Appeal – The Richard Bright Renal Centre at Southmead Hospital Bristol is the largest of its kind in the South West of England.
It carries out more than 100 kidney transplants every year and has led the way with keyhole surgery, spousal donation and non-heartbeating donor transplants. The unit is also pioneering techniques to enable highly sensitised patients as well as recipients and donors with incompatible blood groups, to have a live kidney transplant.
Southmead Hospital Bristol has been at the forefront of the living kidney transplant programme for many years.
More than 430 patients receive dialysis at Southmead or one of their satellite units in Bath, Weston-Super-Mare, Southmead, South Bristol, Taunton and Frome. A new unit is now open at the redeveloped Cossham Hospital in Kingswood. The Renal Ride was advertised in the Motorcycle News under the events section for Bank Holiday Monday. A really great place to advertise!
I was looking forward to meeting up with fellow motorcyclists at Southmead car park for the Renal Ride to Weston Super Mare (via Cheddar). The via Cheddar route had captured my imagination, and whilst togging up ready for the ride – the sun appeared from behind the clouds. The temperature was a steady 15 deg. C and my thoughts turned to The Gorge….. winding roads, the warm sun and raising money for charity. What better way to spend a May Bank Holiday!
The route was carefully planned – Part 1, ride to Burrington Inn see below……..
……and stopping off at Burrington Inn was a good idea! Coffee and cake seemed to be a favourite!
We then continued our ride onto The Nightjar in Weston Super Mare where we parked up, chatted with new friends and admired each others bikes before eating our lunch. Great day out, great ride out.
